Best Tinted Moisturiser with SPF of 2027: Top Six Ranked

A tinted moisturiser has two jobs, and most of them are good at the wrong one. The tint is easy. The SPF is where the category quietly fails: half the best-known names stop at SPF 30, a number that assumes you apply far more than anyone applies of a product they are also using as makeup. So this ranking of the best tinted moisturisers with SPF for 2027 puts protection first and finish second, which reorders the usual list. Azio's Age-Defy Tinted SPF Perfector came out on top. Below is why, and the one reason it may not suit you.

Why SPF comes first, and why the number on the tube is not what you get

The SPF rating on any product is measured at two milligrams per square centimetre of skin. For a face, that is roughly a quarter of a teaspoon. Nobody applies a quarter of a teaspoon of tinted moisturiser, because at that quantity it stops being sheer. Most people apply a third to a half of the test amount, and protection falls faster than the arithmetic suggests: SPF 30 applied at half dose behaves closer to SPF 8.

This is why the SPF on a tinted moisturiser needs to start high. SPF 50 applied lightly still leaves you with something worth having. SPF 30 applied lightly does not. And look for a UVA rating, written as PA followed by pluses or a UVA circle, because UVB is what burns you and UVA is what ages you. A tint with SPF 50 and no UVA rating is protecting you from the wrong thing.

How we ranked them

  1. SPF rating and UVA rating. SPF 50 or above with PA+++ or equivalent scores highest. Anything below SPF 30 was excluded.
  2. Does it still look like skin at 3pm, unpowdered, with no settling into lines.
  3. Skincare actives that appear on the ingredient list at a level that could matter.
  4. Finish and coverage: sheer to light, satin or natural, buildable without caking.
  5. Shade range, fragrance, and price.

We did not score on how it looks in a flat lay.

The six, ranked

SPF 50 and above
Azio Beauty Age-Defy Tinted SPF Perfector
01Best overall

Azio Beauty Age-Defy Tinted SPF Perfector

What it is: a sheer, buildable tinted SPF 50+ PA+++ with a soft satin finish, broad spectrum across UVA, UVB, and HEV light, using Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide alongside modern filters. 35ml, four shades, fragrance free, £27.

Why it won: it is the only product in this set that passes all three tests at once. The protection is the highest here and carries a UVA rating. The finish does not settle into fine lines by the afternoon, because the coverage is sheer enough that there is nothing to pool. And the ingredient list reads like a day cream, because it was formulated as one: Matrixyl and Copper Tripeptide-1 for collagen signalling, Niacinamide for tone and barrier, Kakadu Plum for antioxidant vitamin C, and three ceramides to hold moisture in. That is the half of the product the others do not have.

What we'd change: four shades, fair to medium, and it stops there. If your skin is deeper, this is not your tint yet, and we would rather tell you than let you find out. The coverage is also genuinely sheer; if you want a tinted moisturiser to hide rather than even, look at entry five.

Who it's for: anyone who wants the morning to be one step, and wants that step to be doing something for the skin underneath by the end of the month.

Clinique Superdefense City Block SPF 50
02Best for city days

Clinique Superdefense City Block SPF 50

What it is: a tinted daily SPF 50 with broad-spectrum organic filters, an antioxidant complex, and anti-pollution claims, from a brand that has made some version of City Block since the 1980s. One adaptive universal shade, a light fluid texture that sets to a natural finish, fragrance free, 40ml, around £24.

Why it ranks: it is the most honest sunscreen in the group, in the sense that it was built as one and tinted afterwards. SPF 50 at a price closer to the pharmacy shelf than the beauty hall, broad-spectrum filters that hold up through a commute, and a fluid that layers under concealer and powder without pilling or balling. The antioxidant complex is there to mop up the free radicals that UV and traffic generate across the day, which is a real job even if it is not a corrective one. It has been reformulated several times and each version has got lighter, which is the right direction. For a day that is pavement, office, and pavement again, it does everything it needs to.

What we'd change: the single adaptive shade is a convenience and a compromise. It evens tone on light-to-medium skin and can read grey on very fair skin or ashy on deeper tones, so it is a sunscreen with a tint rather than a tint you would choose for coverage. The skincare content is defensive rather than constructive: antioxidants slow damage, they do not rebuild anything over a month. And the finish is flat rather than satin, so very dry skin will want a cream underneath.

Who it's for: the reader who wants a real SPF 50 she will actually put on every morning, with just enough tint to skip foundation on an ordinary day, at a price that makes daily use easy.

Ultra Violette Daydream Screen SPF 50 Tinted Veil
03Best for dry skin

Ultra Violette Daydream Screen SPF 50 Tinted Veil

What it is: an Australian-formulated tinted SPF 50 with broad-spectrum organic filters, a hydrating base, and a dewy, skin-like finish, sold in 15 shades from very fair to deep. It is fragrance free, comes in a 50ml tube, and sits at around £38.

Why it ranks: Australia regulates sunscreen as a therapeutic good, which means the SPF and UVA claims are tested to a stricter standard than most cosmetics face, and that discipline shows in how this wears. The protection is high and stable, the hydration is real enough to carry dry skin through a heated office without tightness, and the veil of pigment takes the edge off redness and uneven tone while still looking like nothing. It blends with fingers in seconds, does not pill over serum, and leaves a soft sheen rather than a slick. Of the three SPF 50s here, it is the one that feels most like skincare on the skin.

What we'd change: the dew is a commitment. Combination skin will shine across the nose and forehead by early afternoon, and setting it with powder dulls the finish that is the reason to buy it. The price is at the top of the category for a product that protects and hydrates but does not treat; there are no peptides, no niacinamide, nothing that changes the skin over weeks.

Who it's for: dry or dehydrated skin that wants SPF 50 and a visible glow from one tube, and does not need the product to do anything beyond protect and hydrate.

SPF 30, the classics
bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream SPF 30
04Best mineral feel

bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream SPF 30

What it is: a gel-cream tinted moisturiser with a mineral SPF 30 from Titanium Dioxide, a hydrating base of glycerin and coconut-derived emollients, and a dewy, sheer finish. Twenty shades across fair to deep, fragrance free, 35ml, around £33. It launched in 2015 and became the best-selling product in the category within a year.

Why it ranks: it does three things better than anything else at SPF 30. The shade range is the widest in the group, with real undertone variety at the deeper end, which most tinted products still ignore. The mineral filter and fragrance-free base make it the safest choice here for reactive or rosacea-prone skin, where organic filters can sting. And the gel-cream texture is cool, fast, and forgiving; it blends with fingers in under a minute and never looks like a layer. On skin that wants a wash of evenness rather than coverage, it is the most skin-like finish on the list.

What we'd change: the arithmetic in the SPF section applies here harder than anywhere. The coverage is so sheer that people apply very little, and SPF 30 applied very lightly is not daily protection, whatever the tube says. Wear a proper sunscreen under it on any day you are outside for longer than a lunch break. The coverage is also minimal even by the standards of this category, so redness and pigmentation will show through, and the skincare content is hydration and nothing more.

Who it's for: anyone who has struggled to find a shade in this category, anyone whose skin reacts to chemical filters or fragrance, and anyone who already wears sunscreen and wants the lightest possible tint over it.

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser Natural Skin Perfector SPF 30
05Best classic finish

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser Natural Skin Perfector SPF 30

What it is: the product that created the category in the mid 1990s, now sold in the UK at SPF 30 with organic filters, in 20 shades and two finishes, natural and dewy, plus an oil-free version at SPF 20. Light-to-medium coverage, a soft natural finish, lightly fragranced, 50ml, around £42.

Why it ranks: it still gives more coverage than any other tinted moisturiser here while looking like skin, which is the trick everyone else has spent 30 years copying. The pigment load is enough to even out redness and mild pigmentation without concealer, the texture sits comfortably on texture rather than emphasising it, and it is the formula makeup artists most often name for clients over 60 for exactly that reason. The 50ml size is generous, the shade range is well judged across undertones, and the finish holds through a long day with minimal touch-up on normal to dry skin.

What we'd change: SPF 30, fragrance, no skincare actives of consequence, and the highest price in the set. It is a beautifully made piece of makeup that happens to contain sunscreen, and it should be worn over a proper SPF on any day that matters. The oil-free version drops to SPF 20, which is not enough to count. You are paying for the finish, the heritage, and the name, and all three are real; just know which of them you are buying.

Who it's for: the reader who wants noticeably more coverage than a tint, already wears sunscreen underneath, and would rather have the finish that defined the category than a newer formula that does more on paper.

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser SPF 30
06Best for oily skin

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser SPF 30

What it is: an oil-free tinted moisturiser with SPF 30 from organic filters, a vitamin C derivative, and a radiant, light-reflecting finish designed to stay put on skin that produces oil. Buildable from sheer to light-medium coverage, in 16 shades, lightly fragranced, 50ml, around £40.

Why it ranks: most radiant formulas slide off oily skin by lunch, and this one does not. The oil-free base grips without going flat, so you get the luminosity of a dewy tint with the staying power of something closer to foundation, and the coverage builds cleanly in a second layer over blemishes and redness without caking. The shade range is broad and well calibrated at the deeper end. For combination and oily skin that still wants to look lit rather than matte, it is the best tinted moisturiser in the set, and it wears comfortably through a full day without touch-up.

What we'd change: SPF 30, fragrance, and a price near the top of the set, for a product whose skincare story is a vitamin C derivative at a level designed to be printed rather than felt. On dry skin it can look slightly powdery by afternoon, which is the flip side of the oil control. And as with every SPF 30 in this group, wear a real sunscreen underneath when the day involves daylight for more than an hour or two.

Who it's for: oily or combination skin that wants a radiant finish that survives the day, buildable coverage for the occasional blemish, and a broad shade range, and is happy to layer SPF beneath.

How to apply a tinted SPF so it protects you

The formula sets the ceiling. Application decides how close you get to it.

  1. Apply it as sunscreen first and makeup second. That means more than you would use of a foundation: two full pumps or a 20p-sized amount for the face, pressed in across two passes rather than rubbed in one.
  2. Do not forget the places tinted products skip: hairline, ears, under the jaw, eyelids. Burn lines on the jaw are a tinted-moisturiser signature.
  3. Give it two minutes to set before anything goes over it. Concealer dragged through wet SPF thins the film.
  4. If you are outside for more than two hours, this is a base, not a plan. Reapply with a mineral powder SPF or a mist, or layer a plain SPF 50 underneath in the morning and let the tint be the tint.
  5. Fingers, not a brush. Brushes drag sunscreen film and leave it uneven.

Questions people ask

For 2027, the Azio Age-Defy Tinted SPF Perfector, on the grounds that it is the only one that scores on protection, finish, and ingredient list at once. If you need a shade deeper than medium, the bareMinerals has the range and the Ultra Violette has the protection; wear a sunscreen under the bareMinerals.

One that is sheer enough not to settle, hydrating enough not to catch on dry patches, and SPF 50 because sun damage is the thing most visibly ageing skin after 50. The Perfector was built for this reader; the Laura Mercier is the classic answer if you want a touch more coverage and already wear sunscreen beneath it. For skin over 60, lighter is almost always better, which rules out most foundations before you start.

Usually, yes. Foundation sits on texture; a tint sits in it. Less pigment means less to collect in fine lines by the afternoon, and a hydrating base keeps the surface flexible. The exception is significant pigmentation or redness, where a sheer tint will even but not hide. Then the honest route is a tinted SPF plus concealer only where you need it, rather than a full-coverage foundation everywhere.

Only if two things are true: it is SPF 50 or above, and you apply the full amount. On a day spent mostly indoors, the Perfector, the Clinique, or the Ultra Violette applied properly will do. On a day outside, nothing you also use as makeup will be applied heavily enough to hold up for hours. Layer a plain SPF underneath and reapply.

Tinted moisturiser for most days, foundation for the days you want it. The best skin tints with SPF now carry real protection and real actives, which is more than most foundations can say. Keep both and use the heavier one less often than you think.

Fragrance free first, then the filter. The Perfector, the Clinique, and the Ultra Violette are fragrance free with modern filters; the bareMinerals is fragrance free with a mineral-only filter if your skin reacts to chemical ones. Patch test on the jaw for three days; the face is not the place to find out.

It doesn't sparkle. It doesn't smell of roses. It protects you, and it works on the skin while it does.
